The Mirror by Catulle Mendès

How much are you influenced by the way others see you? Main character S in Ernesto Sabato’s The Angel of Darkness muses at one point that hell is being seen by other people.

How many times a day do you look at yourself in the mirror? And how frequently do you judge what you see? French Decadent Catulle Mendès (1841-1909) has been called ‘a Petrarchist of the horrible’. He also was a prolific author, having written 16 novels, 35 short-story collections, 11 volumes of poetry and 13 plays.

If you only read English, chances are you have not read any of his work and for good reason – until recently, a scant amount of his writing has been translated. However, there is one little gem that is a cross between fairytale and decadent conte cruel (cruel tale). Once read, never forgotten.
