Chapter 32
Shelters for Magical Animals
Coinciding with a major esoteric offensive by the Soria magicians, the freezing cold began to fall in the Technocracy around that time. Many needy people died until the Monitor ordered the construction of free shelters where beggars, tramps, and other vagrants and semi-vagrants would have a place to spend the night. Monitor, in his apparent delirium, had heating installed in these places, much to the indignation of his Kratos of Fuels. The head of state loved these men, as already mentioned, for he claimed that the vagrants were magical animals, protectors of the Technocracy. Apparently, the Soria magicians believed this too, for before carrying out a major operation against the technocrats' country, they took care to produce a severe freezing cold in the chosen region, which sometimes lasted for several weeks. In this way, the real beggars—not the vagrant beggars—the truly magical animals, died by the hundreds. Now free from the annoying bolt, the Sorias went on a general attack.
